Overview

Lakeview is a 24-home community on a sloping site above Lake Victoria. Instead of fencing each plot into a compound, the layout shares a central garden, a pedestrian lane and a communal water system — making the most of the view and the breeze.

01 / The brief

The developer wanted a genuinely community-minded estate rather than a row of walled villas. Homes needed to be private, cross-ventilated and low-maintenance, with every unit capturing lake light without overheating in the afternoon.

02 / Our approach

We terraced the site to reduce retaining walls and keep mature trees. Homes are oriented east–west with deep overhangs and shaded courtyards, using locally fired brick, stone from Wakiso and light-gauge steel roofs. Services were grouped in a shared spine so that maintenance never requires digging up a garden.

03 / The result

All 24 homes sold before completion. The shared garden and pedestrian lane have become the social heart of the estate, and the first residents report electricity bills around a third lower than comparable Kampala homes.

“They built us a neighbourhood, not just a house. Two years in, the garden is where every child on the street plays.”
