Overview
The Ggaba expansion added a new treatment train, storage reservoir and twelve kilometres of transmission main to one of Kampala's most constrained water systems. Work was carried out inside a live plant, with existing supply maintained throughout.
01 / The brief
The authority needed more capacity without interrupting service to the neighbourhoods already dependent on the plant. The transmission route crossed a railway reserve, two wetlands and a densely settled hillside — each with its own approvals and access constraints.
02 / Our approach
We built the new treatment train as an independent parallel system, commissioning it in stages before tying into the existing plant. Pipeline works were sequenced around the wet season, with trenchless crossings at the railway and wetland. A community liaison team worked street by street to coordinate access and reinstatement.
03 / The result
The plant reached full capacity three months ahead of schedule, adding roughly six hours of supply per day to the eastern suburbs. Reinstatement was completed within two weeks of each pipe section, and the project closed with zero lost-time incidents.

“They understood that the plant could not stop while we built the future of it. That discipline is why the city noticed the improvement, not the works.”
