Overview

The Entebbe Road upgrade rebuilds 9.4 kilometres of carriageway between Kajjansi and Entebbe, adding a second lane in each direction, new drainage, safer junctions and continuous pedestrian paths. The corridor carries airport traffic, commuters and freight — and it could not close.

01 / The brief

The authority required the road to remain open throughout construction, with access maintained to every business and school along the route. Utilities were unmapped in places, and the corridor crosses a wetland that floods most rainy seasons.

02 / Our approach

We split the works into short, moving sections with contraflow traffic management and a 24-hour community liaison line. Utilities were located by trial trenching before excavation. The wetland section was rebuilt with a raised embankment, oversized culverts and a new drainage channel, rather than the usual patch-and-repeat.

03 / The result

Three of four sections are complete, with journey times down by around 22 minutes at peak. Local employment reached 310 people, and the new drainage has kept the road open through two unusually heavy rainy seasons.
